Alcatraz Island
The island prison, 1934–1963: the 1946 battle, the isolation of Cellblock D, and the utility corridor that sealed the escapees' fate.
Case File No. 025
FILE 01 The Legend
The Rock (1934–1963) — America's most famous prison — held Capone, Stroud (the Birdman), and 'Machine Gun' Kelly in D Block's cells on an island in cold current. Its documented deaths include escape attempts (the 1946 Battle of Alcatraz killed officers and inmates) and murders. Cellblock D's 'hole' cells are the file's core: after the 1946 battle, guards reported unearthly noises from them. The National Park Service runs the island; its audio tour includes guards' own ghost-era testimony.
FILE 02 The Sightings Log
D Block's hole cells: extreme cold, voices and (in the 1970s-era NPS restoration era) reports from workmen of a presence. The hospital wing and utility corridor (site of the 1946 deaths) produce the standard file: footsteps, cell doors clanging in empty blocks. Visitors report the utility corridor's cold spot and utility door opening on its own.
FILE 03 The Skeptic’s File
Alcatraz's documented history — escapes, murders, the battle — is the NPS's lead and the ghosts are visitors' garnish. The 1940s-era hole-cell reports from guards are the file's strongest layer: occupational testimony from sceptical men. Everything else is the standard prison-ghost repertoire amplified by the island's inherent drama. Alcatraz earns its 'A' on the witnesses' quality: even skeptics want a night in D Block.
