Aradale Lunatic Asylum — Ararat
Australia's largest abandoned psychiatric hospital — a kilometer of wards that held 1,000 patients at its peak.
Case File No. 084
FILE 01 The Legend
Opened in 1867 as the Ararat Lunatic Asylum, Aradale was a self-contained town — farms, bakery, morgue, cemetery — for Victoria's 'criminally insane' and destitute. It operated for 130 years before closing in 1997; at its peak it warehoused over 1,000 patients. Its most infamous resident was Margaret Cargill, a nurse murdered by a patient in 1949 — her ward is now the anchor of the ghost tours that run through the complex.
FILE 02 The Sightings Log
Tour guests report locked doors opening, a shadow in Nurse Cargill's ward, and the 'screaming woman' audio captured by visiting TV crews in the women's wards. The morgue and the old refractory wing are described as physically oppressive even by skeptics on the tour. Night investigations regularly claim EVP captures.
FILE 03 The Skeptic’s File
Aradale's real horror is documentary: 19th-century committal papers show women institutionalized for 'post-natal melancholia' and 'religious excitement'. The ghosts are a heritage-business layer added after closure — the site needs tourism revenue to preserve the buildings. Old asylums reliably produce ghost reports; Aradale at least runs its haunted history with the archive open.
