FILE 01 The Legend

In 1937, the Battle of Belchite destroyed the village street by street; Franco ordered the ruins preserved unrepaired as a monument, and a new Belchite was built beside it. The old town has stood roofless ever since — bullet-pocked walls, collapsed churches, streets with no one in them. The site is now fenced and visits are guided only. Legends grew naturally: screams of the battle, phantom soldiers, doors that slam in houses with no roofs.

FILE 02 The Sightings Log

Visitors report inexplicable sounds of gunfire and shouting in the evening, sudden cold, and nausea; some report their cameras failing inside the church walls. The town's guided-tour economy openly includes the haunted framing alongside the historical one.

FILE 03 The Skeptic’s File

What Belchite proves is that trauma-soaked ruins don't need ghosts to frighten — but it has them anyway. The sound reports are, at minimum, untested anecdotes in a wind-scoured ruin; 'camera failure' is dust and old batteries. Spain's government has recently begun stabilizing the ruins; the ghosts will be the last thing preserved.
