FILE 01 The Legend

Bran Castle, a 14th-century fortress pass guarding the route between Transylvania and Wallachia, is marketed worldwide as 'Dracula's Castle'. The link is literary tourism: Bram Stoker, who never visited Transylvania, based his vampire's castle on the region's descriptions; Vlad III 'the Impaler' — Stoker's historical inspiration — is loosely tied to the area, and Romanian legend gives Bran its own strigoi (restless dead) folklore. The castle was home to Queen Marie of Romania in the 1920s and is now a museum.

FILE 02 The Sightings Log

The castle plays its part with restraint: staff recount cold presences on the wooden staircase and the time-capsule rooms of Queen Marie. Local villages keep genuine strigoi traditions — the belief that some dead do not stay dead — which predate Stoker by centuries and are the region's real folklore.

FILE 03 The Skeptic’s File

The Dracula association is a tourism construction: no evidence Stoker knew of Bran specifically, and historians doubt Vlad ever set foot there. The castle's own museum signage says as much. But grade 'S' here is not about evidence — it is about the castle's unmatched position as the world's most famous 'haunted' address, sitting on top of a real, living strigoi folklore tradition that needs no Irish novelist. Go for the history; the shiver comes free.
