FILE 01 The Legend

Čachtice, a border fortress first recorded in 1276, became the wedding gift and then the prison of Elizabeth Báthory (1560–1614), the Hungarian countess accused in 1611 of torturing and killing scores of young women — hundreds in legend, perhaps 650 at the maximum telling. Protected from execution by her rank, she was sealed into a tower room of her own castle in 1610 and died there four years later, fed through a slot in the wall. The castle was abandoned after 1708 and stands roofless above the village. The most theatrical element of her legend — bathing in blood to preserve her youth — appears nowhere in the trial records and entered the story only long after her death; the documented record is grim enough without it.

FILE 02 The Sightings Log

Visitors to the ruins describe a sustained sense of attention from the stones, weeping with no source in the broken chambers, and shadow figures at dusk; paranormal investigators who have worked the site at night report disembodied voices and full-body apparitions, some said to be young girls crying near the dungeon level — read locally as Báthory's victims — and a faceless female form near the tower where the countess was confined, the site's signature ghost.

FILE 03 The Skeptic’s File

Nothing paranormal has ever been documented at Čachtice — the sightings are visitor testimony collected by ghost-hunting channels at a ruin whose entire brand is a murder countess. Historians caution the trial itself was driven by politics and debt as much as justice, and the blood-bathing is confessed folklore. A wind-scoured ruin above a village that profits from dark tourism produces exactly this: cold, dread, and girls who weep on cue.
