Castelinho da Rua Apa — The Massacre the Autopsy Questioned
A 1912 mock-castle in central São Paulo where a cinema magnate's widow and her two sons were found shot dead in 1937 — an official murder-suicide the forensic record itself undermines, and Brazil's most enduring haunted-house file: footsteps and weeping in an empty castle.
Case File No. 381
FILE 01 The Legend
The Castelinho — 'the little castle' — was built in 1912 at Rua Apa and Avenida São João for the family of Virgílio César dos Reis, owner of the Broadway cinema, one of the city's grandest houses in the French style. Virgílio died in early 1937, and on the night of 12 May the household ended: his widow Maria Cândida, 73, and their sons Álvaro, 45, and Armando, 43, were found shot dead inside. The police version closed the case in two days — a quarrel between the brothers over the family money, Álvaro shooting mother and brother and then himself twice in the chest — but the physical record never fit it: the bullets taken from Maria Cândida's body were of a different calibre from the Parabellum found at the scene, the missing weapon was never found, and the brothers' bodies lay side by side, an arrangement almost no murder-suicide produces. The family's own heir, Leda de Castro Kiehl, spent decades on the papers and published 'O Crime do Castelinho: Mitos e Verdades' (2015), arguing a fourth person did it; the case stands unrevised. The house then wrote its second chapter: decades of judicial limbo and abandonment, squatters in a castle, and the haunting file growing the whole time — passers-by and neighbours reporting footsteps on the stairs, weeping, and laments from the empty rooms. Since 1996 it has belonged to a mothers' charity, restored 2015-17, and the sounds are still reported by the street.
FILE 02 The Sightings Log
Neighbours and passers-by have reported footsteps inside the fenced house, a woman's weeping and voiced laments from the upper floors across the abandoned decades; the file continues in retellings after the restoration, and the house is a standard stop on São Paulo ghost-story walks.
FILE 03 The Skeptic’s File
The ghosts are the least mysterious thing here: a castle-shaped house standing empty for sixty years beside a tragedy the city never believed was solved will produce footsteps-and-weeping stories on schedule, and the charity's own administrator, nineteen years in the building, told the press she has never once felt anything. What deserves the attention is the forensic file — the mismatched calibre, the missing gun, the staged-looking scene — a documented open question, not a haunting. The Castelinho is this corpus' honest version of a cursed house: the real anomaly is in the autopsy report, and the ghosts are just how the city keeps the question alive.
