Charleville Castle
A Gothic revival fortress where a little girl who fell down the stairs in 1861 still plays.
Case File No. 061
FILE 01 The Legend
Built 1798-1812 for Charles William Bury, Earl of Charleville, the castle dominates a forest outside Tullamore. Third daughter Harriet, aged 8, died falling down the main staircase in 1861 — her small body was found at the bottom by family. The castle passed through abandonment and volunteer restoration; its ghost tradition grew through the 20th century.
FILE 02 The Sightings Log
Harriet's laughter and running footsteps are the most common report; several visitors describe seeing a girl in blue in the staircase window. A 'ghost boy' in the castle's nursery area. A man in a monk-like robe in the corridors. The castle's volunteer restorers report objects moved overnight in locked rooms.
FILE 03 The Skeptic’s File
Harriet's death is a genuine, documented tragedy (church records confirm). The castle's modern haunting profile rose in tandem with its ghost-tour and TV-appearance economy, and with the practical need of a volunteer restoration project to attract funds — a dynamic the volunteers themselves acknowledge with good humour.
