FILE 01 The Legend

The Château de Brissac, seven floors tall in the Loire Valley, is home of the Dukes of Brissac. In the 15th century, Jacques de Brézé returned home early to find his wife Charlotte in bed with a lover — he killed them both. Charlotte, called the Green Lady for her green dress, is said to walk the chapel tower and a fourth-floor bedroom. The current Duke's family names their most famous room after her.

FILE 02 The Sightings Log

Guests of the family — the castle is a working wine estate that hosts overnight visitors — report groaning, wailing cries in the night from the Green Lady's room, and the sensation of being watched on the chapel stairs. A chapel is said to stand on the spot of the killing; staff report cold spots near it.

FILE 03 The Skeptic’s File

Charlotte's murder is documented history; her ghost is a family-brand story told with pride rather than fear — the Duke himself gives interviews about her. The groans attributed to her are old plumbing, settling beams, or Loire wind — none of which stops overnight guests from asking for her room. A working example of a haunting that is co-owned by its hosts.
