FILE 01 The Legend

Coal baron Robert Dunsmuir died in 1889, seventeen months before his 39-room castle was finished; his sons completed it, and his widow Joan moved in 1890 with three unmarried daughters and two orphaned grandchildren. The family's tenure was haunted in life — inheritance wars that split the Dunsmuirs, Joan's death in 1908, and the estate's subdivision and raffle as a real-estate stunt. The house then served as a military hospital, college, school-board office and conservatory of music before becoming the museum society's castle in 1979 — a century of occupants layering their own atmosphere into the stained glass and oak.

FILE 02 The Sightings Log

The castle's most-told phenomena are auditory: a piano playing in the ballroom — with docents noting the odd twist that the castle holds three period pianos — whispers in empty rooms, and children's laughter on the upper floors. Joan Dunsmuir is said to walk the main staircase in a ballgown; visitors report cold spots, the scent of tallow candles in her room, and a child-sized figure in the basement that vanishes when approached.

FILE 03 The Skeptic’s File

The museum society's interpretation centers on the Dunsmuirs, industry and class — the ghost stories circulate through regional media and paranormal blogs rather than official materials. A four-story stone house with 87 tower steps, old heating and volunteer staff generates every cliché of the genre; nothing has been documented beyond decades of anecdote. The verified drama is the family's own — money, grief and litigation — which needs no ghosts.
