Galle Fort — The White Lady on the Ramparts
The UNESCO-listed Dutch fort at Sri Lanka's southern tip, layering three colonial administrations over each other, where the standing modern legends are a White Lady who walks the cobbles and vanishes at the wall, Dutch-era soldiers on the bastions, and whispering between the pews of the Dutch Reformed Church.
Case File No. 292
FILE 01 The Legend
Galle was fortified by the Portuguese in the sixteenth century and rebuilt by the Dutch from 1649; the British took it in 1796. Five Dutch governors lie beneath the floor of the Wolvendaal Church of 1749, and the grid of streets, churchyards and ramparts layers three colonial administrations on top of each other. The White Lady is the dominant modern legend — a woman in white walking the cobbles and the edge of the ramparts late at night, usually tied to a local woman who loved a foreign soldier and was separated from him by family or military authority. A 2026 feature in The Morning Telegraph catalogued the fort's standing legends, and guides repeat them to visitors after sunset.
FILE 02 The Sightings Log
Contemporary accounts describe a translucent female figure on the ramparts and along Church Street, walking a fixed route and vanishing at the wall; others report Dutch-era soldiers standing on the bastions or whispering between the pews of the Dutch Reformed Church. The fort's empty lanes after the day-trippers leave do most of the atmospheric work.
FILE 03 The Skeptic’s File
The White Lady is a global archetype with no Galle-specific original — the very accounts that spread the story list several incompatible backstories for her, from betrayed lover to grieving mother. At night the ramparts are lit unevenly, and sea fog, moonlight on white chunam plaster and laundry on a line produce exactly the pale moving figure described. The fort is a UNESCO World Heritage site and a lived-in neighbourhood; the Archaeological Department and the Galle Heritage Foundation manage it as heritage, and no ghost-related measure has ever been taken.
