FILE 01 The Legend

Gonjiam Psychiatric Hospital operated from 1991 to 1997, then stood abandoned — a modernist complex in a valley outside Seoul that Korean internet lore says closed after a string of mysterious patient deaths, with the director said to have fled to Japan. CNN Travel once listed it among the world's 'freakiest places'. The building became the setting for Korea's 2018 hit found-footage horror film 'Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum', which made it internationally famous. The site is closed to entry and monitored.

FILE 02 The Sightings Log

Explorers reported objects moving in the wards, sudden fogs in corridors, faces at windows, and an overwhelming rotten smell with no source. The 2018 film's viral marketing leaned on the real legend — the film's crew claimed equipment failure during shooting.

FILE 03 The Skeptic’s File

The 'patient deaths' story has no documentary support; the hospital's closure is attributed by reporting to sewage and financial problems. The building was sealed and patrolled precisely because trespassers kept injuring themselves. Since the movie, the site has been fenced and partially demolished — a case where the legend's biggest enemy was its own fame. Everything supernatural traces to anonymous internet posts, then a work of fiction, which is now cited as if it were evidence.
