FILE 01 The Legend

The psychiatric hospital at Gonjiam, Gyeonggi Province, opened in 1961 and closed in 1997 — a closure documented as economic, with unsanitary conditions and sewage-system failures. The internet did the rest: through the 2000s Korean web forums grew a canon of patient deaths, mad doctors and a cursed operating room, and the emptied complex — reached past 'do not enter' signage — became Korea's most famous illegal urbex destination, listed by CNN Travel among the world's 'freakiest places'. The 2018 found-footage hit 'Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum', one of Korean horror's highest-grossing films, blew the legend worldwide. Gwangju city's response was final: after persistent trespass, accidents and fires set by explorers, the authorities demolished the hospital buildings in 2018–19. Visitors now find a cleared slope beside the ski resort; the legend lost its building and kept its address.

FILE 02 The Sightings Log

The classic accounts — from explorers, before demolition — were respiratory groans in the corridors, doors of the psychiatric ward that resisted opening from inside, and photographic anomalies in the operating theatre. Post-demolition testimony has moved to the treeline: figures seen at the edge of the empty lot at dusk, and the persistent feeling, reported by hikers, that something is still admitted there.

FILE 03 The Skeptic’s File

Government and police examinations found no record of the mass patient deaths the legend centres on; the hospital closed for plumbing and money. This is the internet-era ghost story in its pure form: forum rumour compounded by a blockbuster film, then enforced by trespass and arson until the city deleted the set. The afterlife of a demolished haunted hospital is the cleanest natural experiment available — the accounts continue undiminished on an empty field, which tells you the ghosts lived in the storytelling, not the building.
