Highland Towers — The Towers That Fell
Where Block 1 of a hillside condominium collapsed in 1993 killing 48 people — and the two towers left standing sealed Malaysia's most famous haunting for 26 years.
Case File No. 146
FILE 01 The Legend
After ten days of rain, on 11 December 1993 at 1:35 pm, roughly 100,000 cubic metres of saturated slope pushed Block 1 of Highland Towers sideways down the hill of Ulu Klang, killing 48 residents in Malaysia's worst high-rise disaster. Blocks 2 and 3 were declared unsafe the same day and never reoccupied. For 26 years the two empty towers loomed over the site, off limits behind legal disputes, feeding documentaries and a 2013 horror film. A magistrates' court approved the demolition of the surviving blocks in June 2026, and redevelopment is now planned for the site.
FILE 02 The Sightings Log
Security guards posted against trespassers reported footsteps and voices inside the sealed towers after dark; visitors told of cold spots and of being watched from the dark windows. The signature legend is the taxi driver who picked up a young woman asking to go to Hillview, was told 'I left several of my belongings here', and found the back seat empty at the gate. A second tells of a boy with a half-torn face searching the rubble for his lost arm.
FILE 03 The Skeptic’s File
The collapse, the toll and the decades of abandonment are public record; the ghosts are not — no sighting traces to a named witness, and observers at the site have noted that stories discouraging trespassers were convenient for owners and police alike. With the towers now coming down, the haunting is passing from place into memory.
