H.H. Holmes' Murder Castle Site — Englewood's PlainFacade Legacy

Chicago, Illinois, United States · 41.7805, -87.6571

The corner of 63rd and Wallace where America's first serial killer ran a murder hotel during the 1893 World's Fair — the castle is long gone, but a New Deal post office stands over part of its foundation, and its basement keeps the stories.

FILE 01 The Legend

Herman Mudgett — Dr. H.H. Holmes — built a three-story block at 601-603 West 63rd Street between 1889 and 1891, hiring and firing contractors so no one man would know the whole design: gas jets, chutes, a basement with a dissection table and lime pit. During the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition the “hotel” filled with fair visitors; a documented nine victims are tied to the building, though Holmes confessed to 27 (several of whom were alive). The castle burned in 1895, was rebuilt, and finally fell in 1938 for a federal post office that stands there today — its footprint shifted, with the heart of the old castle under the grassy bank beside it.

FILE 02 The Sightings Log

Postal workers have reported basement phenomena for decades — shadow figures in the old section, unexplained sounds — claims aired in a 2021 CBS Chicago investigation and on Chicago ghost tours that stop at the corner. Adam Selzer, the historian who has done the most to separate Holmes fact from pulp, notes the surviving basement section that may be original to the castle.

FILE 03 The Skeptic’s File

Modern research (Selzer's “The White City Devil,” the 2023 Chicago Tribune debunking) has dismantled most of the Murder Castle legend: the gas-chamber labyrinth was newspaper invention, several “victims” turned up alive, and the hotel barely operated as one. What is certain — fraud, murder of the Pitezel family, execution in 1896 — needed no castle. The post office basement noises are the folklore layer on a real atrocity's address.
