FILE 01 The Legend

Hospital Colônia de Barbacena opened in 1903 in Minas Gerais' cool highlands and became, by steady drift, Brazil's machine for disappearing the inconvenient: of the tens of thousands interned over eight decades, the majority were not mentally ill but the abandoned — beggars, alcoholics, rebels, homosexuals and unwanted relatives delivered by their own families to a complex served by its own train. Around 60,000 died, overwhelmingly of malnutrition and infection — the mortality ran so high that staff called it a death camp, and the dead went to mass graves. Journalist Daniela Arbex's investigation, published as 'O Holocausto Brasileiro' (2016), fixed the number in national memory from the hospital's own records. Part of the complex became the Museum of Madness in 1996; in May 2026, as El País reported, the last 14 patients were transferred out and the era formally ended.

FILE 02 The Sightings Log

Testimony collected at the museum and by visiting crews clusters in the old infirmaries and the wooded sites of the mass graves: patients' voices calling in the corridors, wheelchair movement behind locked doors, and the smell — described again and again — of carbolic soap and gangrene in wards that have been empty for decades. Night guards at the museum report lights in the locked administration wing.

FILE 03 The Skeptic’s File

The deaths are documented in the institution's own ledgers — this is the rare 'haunted' site where the horror is fully archived, and the ghost stories are a moral response wearing a sheet. What skeptics flag is the monetisation: dark-tour traffic and paranormal shoots on a site that is, essentially, a mass grave of the poor. The honest register is the museum's — testimony, names where they exist, and the bureaucratic machinery that made 60,000 deaths routine. The haunting is the history; everything else is packaging.
