Buda Castle, Budapest, Hungary · 47.4985, 19.0355

FILE 01 The Legend

Budapest's Castle Hill is honeycombed with ten kilometres of natural limestone cave, used for centuries for storage, prisoners and Ottoman harems. Between 1941 and 1943 the city converted the caverns into an emergency surgical hospital, opened on 20 February 1944. During the 50-day siege of Budapest it became the only place in the city where a wound could still be x-rayed or amputated: built for 60-70 patients, it held as many as 600-700, three to a bunk, the dead carried out at night into bomb craters, supplies sterilised off corpses for reuse. It reopened in the 1956 revolution, then between 1958 and 1962 was rebuilt as a nuclear bunker for 200 doctors and nurses — gas filters, Danube water, twin Ganz diesel generators that still turn over. Its existence was classified under the code LOSK 0101/1 until 2002; one caretaker family maintained it in secret until 2004. It has been a museum since 2007.

FILE 02 The Sightings Log

Staff and visitors report footsteps, voices and the smell of carbolic in empty wards; the museum's wax figures — soldiers on stretchers, nurses mid-operation — are designed to trigger exactly this response, and they work.

FILE 03 The Skeptic’s File

Everything checkable here is archive fact, down to the chief surgeon's name; the hauntings are an admitted overlay, half of them manufactured by waxworks and low lighting. The site does not need inventing: a real cave hospital where hundreds died under a burning city is already the product.
