FILE 01 The Legend

On the eighth of November the Cementerio General of La Paz fills with people carrying skulls. The ñatitas — 'the flat-nosed ones' — are human skulls kept in family homes, believed to protect the household, and on this day they are brought out, crowned with flowers, offered cigarettes, coca and alcohol, and carried to the cemetery chapel for blessing. Many skulls are named; most are anonymous — their bones gathered generations ago from old ossuaries and graves, their identities unknown. The devotion fuses pre-Columbian Andean reverence for ancestors with Catholic All Souls' practice, and it is not marginal: La Paz's police officers have been known to keep case-solving ñatitas, and the Catholic hierarchy, after generations of unease, now tolerates a mass for the skulls. National Geographic has documented the festival as one of the world's most distinctive celebrations of the dead.

FILE 02 The Sightings Log

The festival's phenomena are the skulls' own work: devotees report the ñatas — as they are called when addressed warmly — warming in the hands before good news, cracking before misfortune, and appearing in dreams with warnings and lottery numbers. Householders describe doors opening to the skulls' preference and the smell of the cigarettes they smoke on their feast day.

FILE 03 The Skeptic’s File

What La Paz hosts is not a haunting but a living religion, and reading it as 'paranormal' mistakes Andean household devotion for ghost stories. The skulls' powers are a matter of faith the church itself declines to certify — a Bolivian bishops' conference has had to negotiate its position repeatedly — and the warmth-in-the-hands, dreams and cracks are the standard providence of any folk cult: unfalsifiable, warm, and useful. The verifiable facts are anthropological: thousands of real skulls, many of uncertain provenance, loved as family. That is the actual astonishment.
