FILE 01 The Legend

William Larnach, a bank manager made rich by Otago gold, built his castle 1871–1887 with craftsmen imported from Europe. Grief defined it: his eldest daughter Kate died in 1886 at 26, his second wife and then his third died young, and in 1898, ruined financially and politically, Larnach shot himself in a parliament building in Wellington. The castle fell into dereliction until the Barker family restored it from 1967.

FILE 02 The Sightings Log

Kate Larnach's ghost is said to linger in her favorite room; guests report the scent of her perfume and a young woman at a window. Staff describe doors unlatching themselves in the ballroom. The Barker family, who live on site, have publicly recounted their own unexplained experiences — rare first-person testimony from owners.

FILE 03 The Skeptic’s File

No aspect of the Larnach story requires invention: the deaths, the suicide, the dereliction are all documented. The hauntings began with the castle's tourism revival — but the family's willingness to attach their names to experiences, without selling them as proven, gives Larnach a candor most castle-ghost stories lack. Whether Kate walks is unproven; that the castle broke everyone who owned it is history.
