Leap Castle
Ireland's most feared castle — an 'Elemental' spirit guards an oubliette stuffed with human bones.
Case File No. 060
FILE 01 The Legend
Seat of the murderous O'Carroll clan, where brother reportedly killed brother at the altar (the 'Bloody Chapel'). In the 1920s workmen renovating the castle found a hidden oubliette — a spike-bottomed dungeon — packed with an estimated 150 skeletons, taking three cart-loads to remove. The castle's 'Elemental' — a decaying, hateful presence smelling of sulphur and rotting flesh — is said to be the castle's oldest inhabitant, predating the O'Carrolls.
FILE 02 The Sightings Log
The Elemental has been reported leaning over visitors' shoulders on the stairs. Occultist W. B. Yeats visited in 1897 after reports of hauntings and wrote about the experience. The current family reports slammed doors, a woman in red, and the smell of burning in the Bloody Chapel.
FILE 03 The Skeptic’s File
The oubliette bones are real and documented — one of the few Irish ghost sites with forensic evidence of atrocity. The 'Elemental', however, entered folklore largely via channel/occult writers in the early 20th century. Yeats's own conclusion after investigation was agnostic; he found the family's experiences sincere but evidence thin.
