Case File No. 007
FILE 01 The Legend
On August 4, 1892, Andrew and Abby Borden were axed to death in their Fall River home; Andrew's daughter Lizzie was acquitted in 1893 and lived out her days in town under a cloud. The house on Second Street is now a bed-and-breakfast where guests sleep in the murder rooms. The case is America's most famous unsolved domestic murder, and the verse — 'Lizzie Borden took an axe...' — fixed it in the national memory before any ghost story was needed.
FILE 02 The Sightings Log
Guests in Abby and Andrew's rooms report a woman weeping, indentations as if someone sits on the bed, and the sound of the murder hour: heavy breathing and three thuds at the correct wall. Staff report a woman in Victorian dress on the stairs and objects relocating in the sitting room. The B&B's guest books run for years of first-person accounts.
FILE 03 The Skeptic’s File
The murders are cold fact; the killer was never proven. The hauntings are the hospitality industry's most reliable product: a sealed 1892 crime scene you can sleep in, primed by the rhyme every guest knows by heart. Still, the Borden house has something most haunted B&Bs lack — a documented double murder at the exact coordinates, which is why it anchors every credible US list despite thin evidence.
