FILE 01 The Legend

Founded in 1123 by Cistercian monks from Burgundy, Santa Maria di Lucedio reclaimed the Po plain marshes and introduced rice cultivation to Italy — it is the cradle of Italian rice, visited by three popes. But the abbey's fame in modern folklore rests on a darker legend: that in the 16th century the devil sent women to seduce the brothers, that the community turned to Satanism, and that executions and gruesome rites followed in the chapter house. The abbey passed through princes and rice farmers, and today operates as the Principato di Lucedio farm beside its medieval core.

FILE 02 The Sightings Log

Reports cluster on the church, the octagonal bell tower and the chapter house pillar said to weep the tears of prisoners once tied to it. Visitors describe sudden mists inside the complex, lights moving over the rice fields, whispers, and a recurring sensation of a hand on the shoulder. Ghost Hunters International investigated in January 2008 for the episode 'Evil Unearthed', reporting shadows and a whispering voice — while conceding the weeping pillar was dry that night.

FILE 03 The Skeptic’s File

Lucedio is a working farm and heritage site with a Gothic-romance legend attached in modern times; the Satanism story appears in no period document. The chapter house pillar is a lump of stone, the mists are Po-valley humidity, and TV ghost hunters announcing sensations is not evidence of anything but good storytelling.
