FILE 01 The Legend

The Marfa Lights first reached print in a 1957 article in Coronet Magazine mentioning reports 'dating back to the 1800s' — and the legend later got infrastructure: the state built the roadside viewing area on US-67 nine miles east of town, complete with interpretive signage presenting the lights as an unexplained phenomenon. The report class: globes, colored spheres or clusters splitting and merging over the Mitchell Flats, viewable on many nights, sometimes for hours. The scientific attempts form a canon of their own: a 2004 University of Texas of the Permian Basin electromagnetic study, and a 2005 Society of Physics Students (UT Austin) study concluding the lights are car headlights on US-67 — a conclusion disputed by witnesses who reported the lights decades before that highway carried night traffic. Marfa's art-town economy adopted the lights whole: the Marfa Lights Festival, and a viewing area that is itself a piece of folklore infrastructure — the state built a monument to an unexplained phenomenon.

FILE 02 The Sightings Log

A continuous stream of reports from the 1957 Coronet debut through the present, from the official viewing area, remote cameras, and researchers; the viewing-area signs themselves invite the report, and the festival keeps the phenomenon in the town's calendar.

FILE 03 The Skeptic’s File

The 2005 Society of Physics Students study concluded car headlights on US-67 explain the lights' positions and colors — the standard skeptical verdict — but the pre-highway report file and the splitting-merging behavior keep the case officially open; honest filing: America's most famous earth-lights case, studied repeatedly, still unexplained in its hard core.
