Moosham Castle — The Witches' Castle
Austrian witch trials sent women to this castle's dungeons — where instruments of the executions are still displayed.
Case File No. 070
FILE 01 The Legend
Moosham Castle in the Lungau region served as an administrative seat during the Salzburg witch trials of 1670–1690, among Europe's deadliest. Dozens of accused — mostly elderly women — were interrogated in its chambers and executed nearby. Local tradition adds werewolf panics to the castle's record. Today the castle museum displays trial records and said instruments, and runs ghost events in the dungeons.
FILE 02 The Sightings Log
Visitors report the smell of burning, sensations of being touched or scratched in the dungeon level, and figures in period dress on the stairways. Ghost-hunting TV crews have filmed overnight vigils here, claiming EVP captures; the castle markets itself on this reputation.
FILE 03 The Skeptic’s File
The witch trials are grimly documented history — but everything supernatural is modern layering on a museum that sells dungeon tours. Scratches reported by TV crews were never medically documented. The real horror of Moosham needs no ghosts: the trials' paper trail survives in the castle's own archive, showing neighbors denouncing neighbors for profit.
