◎ 1920s bend legend

FILE 01 The Legend

Old Pali Road climbs out of Honolulu through Nuuanu Valley, and Morgan's Corner is its notorious hairpin — named for a Dr. James Morgan, whose house stood at the bend in the early twentieth century. The legend is layered in generations: the oldest stratum is a woman said to have been hanged from an algarroba tree at the corner, whose appearances gave the bend its local name by the 1920s-30s. Around it accreted the classic teen-dare complex — a stone wall that curses those who climb it, hanging vines said to creep toward cars parked at midnight, a whispered-count test borrowed from mainland vanishing-hitchhiker playbooks, and the modern retcon that the road is haunted because it was carved through the valley where Kamehameha I's army drove the defenders of Oahu from the Nuuanu Pali in 1795. Each element is datable: the hanging woman to the 1920s, the dare rituals to the 1950s, the battlefield retcon to the 1970s. The corner remains a named stop on Oahu's ghost-tour maps even now that the old road is closed to cars.

FILE 02 The Sightings Log

Generations of Honolulu teens report the woman at the bend, creeping vines and a wall that brings bad luck; the corner was a standard stop on local ghost tours when Old Pali Road was drivable, and the bend remains a named place on Oahu's legend maps.

FILE 03 The Skeptic’s File

Morgan's Corner is a textbook example of legend layered on landscape: the hanging-woman story has never matched a documented Nuuanu hanging, the vines are introduced algarroba doing what vines do, and the 1795 conquest layer is patriotic retconning added long after the dare legends were established. Folklorists treat it as Oahu's best-documented teen legend cycle — the corner's real product is nerves, not ghosts.
