Pluckley — The Drowning Man's Village
Listed in a 1989 Guinness Book of Records edition as England's most haunted village — home to 12-plus resident ghosts.
Case File No. 054
FILE 01 The Legend
The Kent village's ghost census includes the Highwayman (pinned to a tree by swords at Fright Corner), the Screaming Woods (Dering Woods, where villagers' screams are said to come from those lost there), a hanged schoolmaster in Drowning Lane, a phantom coach and horses, a gypsy woman who burned to death, the Red Lady and White Lady of Dering family graves in St Nicholas' churchyard, and a colonel who hanged himself in a farm attic.
FILE 02 The Sightings Log
Visitors to the Screaming Woods report disembodied cries and hands grabbing at them after dark. The Black Horse pub's upstairs is said to host a poltergeist that moves glasses. Locals report the phantom of a miller still walking his mill's footprint — his apparition reportedly covered in flour dust.
FILE 03 The Skeptic’s File
The Guinness listing traced back to a 1950s write-up by ghost-book author Frederick Sanders, not a formal count. University of the West of England researchers found many of Pluckley's 'ghosts' could not be traced before the 1950s vogue. Villagers themselves have complained the legend brings night-time ghost-hunters trespassing — the real nuisance is the living.
