FILE 01 The Legend

The third Princess Theatre, built in 1886 on Spring Street for the triumvirate of Williamson, Garner and Musgrove with a sliding roof to cool summer houses, was Melbourne's temple of opera. On 3 March 1888, in the final scene of Gounod's 'Faust', the baritone Frederick Baker — stage name Federici — was lowered through the trapdoor as Mephistopheles descended to hell; he suffered a heart attack and died minutes later, having just sung his last note. The company's grief became tradition almost at once: Federici stays. A seat in the dress circle is kept for him on opening nights, and generations of management have credited the house's good fortune to its resident ghost — a legend the theatre itself now markets.

FILE 02 The Sightings Log

Ushers and backstage staff describe a dark-suited figure in the upper boxes during empty-house hours, and cold patches on the grand staircase. Performers report Federici as benign — lights dimming on their own as if in acknowledgement, missed cues recovered as if guided, and a house-wide superstition that productions go smoothly when he is watching. The empty opening-night seat is the living ritual: no one is allowed to sell it.

FILE 03 The Skeptic’s File

Federici is folklore the theatre has found commercially and emotionally useful for 130 years — the venue itself markets him, which settles the question of origin. A late-Victorian theatre is a maze of draughts and pre-show suggestion; the reserved seat is ritual, not evidence. What is real is the 1888 death, the era's medicine, and a company tradition that keeps a dead colleague on the cast list.
