The atom grad — the Soviet atomic city founded on 4 February 1970 for the plant's builders — was a showcase city of 49,360 people, evacuated by bus on 27 April 1986, roughly 36 hours after reactor four exploded; it has stood empty ever since.

FILE 01 The Legend

The haunting of Pripyat is not a ghost story in the sheet-and-chain sense; it is the most complete time capsule of a stopped civilization anywhere on Earth, and the world agrees to read it as haunted. The city was founded on 4 February 1970 for the builders and staff of the Lenin Nuclear Power Station, proclaimed a city in 1979, and had grown to a population of 49,360 when the nearby reactor exploded at 01:23 on 26 April 1986. The evacuation on the afternoon of 27 April was announced as temporary — bring documents and valuables, the city will be waiting — and no resident ever returned to live there. What the abandoned fabric preserves is uncanny by any measure: school notebooks still open on desks, an amusement park with its yellow Ferris wheel that never officially opened (it was to launch on 1 May 1986, days after the accident; some accounts say it was run briefly for evacuees or operators before the evacuation, a detail ghost tours love to dispute), the Azure Swimming Pool that stayed in use by liquidators until 1996 — a decade after the disaster — while the city around it emptied, and the famous welcome sign at the city entrance. The uncanny reading is old and layered: the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. game series from 2007 that reimagined the Zone as an anomalous-artifact wilderness (and, journalists later documented, helped seed a real-world tourist boom that queues grew for a decade before the HBO series), Call of Duty missions set inside the Zone, and the 2019 HBO Chernobyl series that lifted visitor numbers by about 30 per cent overnight, per the Pripyat tourist office. Tourism scholarship treats the site as a defining case of dark tourism and 'ruin porn': LSE researchers writing on Chernobyl dark tourism, and a 2010 City journal essay on 'Petrified ruin', both read Pripyat as the city haunted by representations of its own ruin. The ghost-hunt layer exists too and is honestly thinner: urbex lists rank the exclusion zone 'the most famous ghost on Earth', but their evidence is atmosphere and anecdotes rather than documented apparitions, and this entry files that layer as legend, not sighting. Respect note: the catastrophe itself killed and displaced real people in the tens of thousands; this entry treats the disaster as history and the haunting as the culture's later reading of an abandoned, still-radioactive city.

FILE 02 The Sightings Log

The verifiable record is documentary, not apparitional: the evacuation of ~49,360 residents on 27 April 1986; the liquidators' decade of use of the Azure Swimming Pool; official dosimetry and guided tourism since the zone opened to visitors; and the tourism economy itself — the Pripyat tourist office reported a 30% visitor jump after the HBO series, on top of a decade of growth credited partly to the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games. Ghost-list sites claim the zone is 'the most famous ghost on Earth' and circulate orb and shadow anomalies in tourist photos, but no mainstream journalistic account has documented an apparition.

FILE 03 The Skeptic’s File

Nothing about Pripyat is occult. The dose rate is real and measurable, the abandonment is a public-health fact, and the 'haunted' experience is a psychological and aesthetic response to a city frozen mid-sentence — scholars call it dark tourism or the attraction of petrified ruin. The Ferris wheel's 'never opened' line is itself disputed; the strongest evidence suggests it was installed for the 1 May 1986 opening that never came, possibly run briefly before the evacuation. Tour operators have a commercial stake in the eeriest possible telling.
