FILE 01 The Legend

In the lane architecture of old Shanghai, a handful of 1920s–30s villas stand boarded and unclaimed, and the pick of them is the Qiu family mansion off Weihai Road — a grand Western-style residence said to have belonged to a wealthy family surnamed Qiu (some tellings say a businessman of the Republican era). The story that circulates in city ghost-lore is that the household vanished — fled, or died — around the upheavals of 1949, and that the house has changed hands badly or not at all ever since. Sealed doors, deep courtyards and one of the most expensive land parcels in China somehow sitting 'unlucky' and empty: the contrast is the engine of the legend.

FILE 02 The Sightings Log

The neighbourhood stories are classic Shanghai: footsteps and voices from a house with no occupant, lights in windows of a building with no power, and would-be buyers or workers who fall ill, quarrel or abandon renovations. Urban explorers who claim to have entered describe rotted luxury — chandeliers, furniture left mid-room as if the owners stepped out — and an oppressive feeling that mounts the further in they go. No incident has a named witness on the record; the mansion's fame runs on retelling.

FILE 03 The Skeptic’s File

Old Shanghai is full of properties with tangled Republican-era title, wartime deaths and Cultural-Revolution seizures that left houses legally radioactive for decades — an 'unlucky' seal is often just a lawsuit. The vanished-family story exists in a dozen contradictory versions, and the mansion's legend grew exactly as long-abandoned prime real estate in a superstitious market would be expected to grow it.
