The Vanishing House of Resneliler — Ankara's Ghost Mansion

Kavaklidere / Cankaya, Ankara, Turkey · 39.9075, 32.8540

A derelict mansion on a lane in central Ankara that made national news in 2021 when residents reported a house that appears and disappears, screams from its empty rooms, and figures in its windows — a case where a capital city's media seriously chased an urban legend for a full news cycle.

FILE 01 The Legend

In 2021 Turkish national media covered a strange story from a central Ankara street: residents of the Resneliler area and passers-by reported that an abandoned mansion on the lane appeared and vanished — present on some visits, gone on others — and that screams, crying and figures in windows were reported from its empty rooms. The house had a real history: an old Republican-era mansion, long derelict, with the standard neighbourhood lore of suicide, murder or cursed families attached to it. Television crews filmed the street; residents were interviewed on camera repeating the appearances; the municipality was asked whether the building existed on official maps. The episode became Turkey's most-discussed haunted-house case of the decade — an urban legend promoted to a news event — and the internet folklore around it, portals and djinn and a house that is there and not there, has persisted since. The mundane resolution most coverage converged on: a derelict building whose appearance changes radically with lighting, fencing and vegetation, on a narrow lane easy to mistake for its neighbours, in a city where such houses are demolished quietly and quickly.

FILE 02 The Sightings Log

Named witnesses on national television: residents interviewed by news crews describing screams and vanishing architecture; the 2021 coverage is itself the sighting record, unusually durable because it is archived in mainstream press rather than forums. Follow-on reports in Turkish paranormal media added djinn readings and portal claims; neighbourhood children dared each other into the lane; the disappearances were still being reported in the coverage's aftermath. No physical evidence survived examination, and the television visits found empty rooms.

FILE 03 The Skeptic’s File

A house that appears and vanishes cannot be investigated as a phenomenon because it is a claim about misperception: derelict buildings on narrow lanes, half-occluded by trees and fences, genuinely look different across visits, and the scream reports cluster in a city quarter with nightlife and construction noise. The 2021 media wave is textbook legend-tripping amplified by a slow news week: no photograph of the house absent was ever produced, despite every claimant carrying a camera. What the case genuinely documents is how a modern capital city still manufactures haunted-house folklore using the same ingredients — dereliction, ambiguity, screams at night — as the nineteenth century. Grade B for a media-documented, named-witness urban legend; the evidence is testimony all the way down, and the house itself was ordinary.
