FILE 01 The Legend

Robert the Doll, a century-old toy given to painter Robert Eugene Otto around 1906, sits in his original sailor suit in Fort East Martello, Key West. The Otto family told of the doll moving windows, giggling, and threatening visitors; a poet visitor in the 1970s publicized it, and letters to Robert — thousands, from people asking forgiveness for photographing him — fill a cabinet beside his case. He is Key West's most famous resident-dead-or-alive.

FILE 02 The Sightings Log

Visitors who photograph Robert without permission report car crashes, divorces, job loss and worse — the museum keeps the letters. Staff report his facial expression changing, and toys placed in his case found rearranged. His original childhood room at the Otto house (the 'Artist House') is separately haunted by legend.

FILE 03 The Skeptic’s File

The curse letters are a self-selecting attribution engine: among thousands of visitors, misfortunes follow naturally and get mailed to the museum, which displays them as evidence. The doll's 'expressions' are a century-old painted face under changing light. But Robert is honest folklore at work — a genuinely creepy artifact (human hair, sailor suit, button eyes) and a ritual (ask permission) that guarantees engagement. He earns his place as America's most famous haunted object.
