◎ 1911 hotelfirst in print 2011

Oklahoma City's 1911 flagship hotel, closed for nineteen years and reborn in 2007 next to the NBA arena — whose visiting teams credit the ghost of a chambermaid with sleepless nights, making her the only ghost with a documented effect on professional basketball standings.

FILE 01 The Legend

William Balser Skirvin opened his namesake hotel in 1911 — ten stories of brick and terra cotta that stood as Oklahoma City's tallest and grandest through the oil boom, expanding in the 1920s annex. The story attached to the ghost is hotel-standard: a chambermaid, by tradition named Effie, said to have been Skirvin's mistress, who leapt (or fell, versions differ) from an upper-floor window with her baby after he abandoned her. The hotel closed in 1988 and stood empty for nineteen years — the years the legend consolidated — before a public-private renovation reopened it in 2007 as the Skirvin Hilton, timed for the city's new NBA franchise. Then the ghost went professional: in January 2011, New York Knicks players blamed a sleepless night on the hotel's ghost, the story went national, and 'the Skirvin is haunted' became a running subplot of the NBA season — visiting teams request room changes, players joke about Effie on social media, and the hotel leans in with ghost-themed marketing. It is the cleanest case on file of a ghost with a scoreboard.

FILE 02 The Sightings Log

Hotel staff report a baby's cry and a woman's voice on the ninth and tenth floors, and doors and elevators with opinions; the documented modern witness class is NBA players and staff — Knicks (2011), Bulls and other visiting teams have publicly blamed the hotel for sleepless nights, and players still joke about Effie each season.

FILE 03 The Skeptic’s File

A 1911 building renovated after nineteen years empty will have HVAC, elevator and plumbing eccentricities, and the Effie story is the mistress-and-baby legend attached to grand hotels the continent over — no contemporaneous record of the death exists. The NBA layer is the interesting part: players in a superstition-rich league blaming a famous local ghost for a bad night's sleep is folklore in real time, printable and disprovable, and it still moves room assignments.
