FILE 01 The Legend

On Good Friday, 12 April 1968, Maria Charlotte Roux — a 22-year-old clerk travelling with her fiancé to finalise wedding plans with her parents — died when their Volkswagen Beetle was blown off the road near the Barandas turnoff outside Uniondale. Her fiancé survived. Eight years later, on a wet Easter evening, Anthony le Grange stopped for a young hitchhiker in a blue blouse and black coat; when he turned to speak, the seat was empty — and from a photograph he later identified his passenger as Maria Roux. In 1978 army corporal Dawie van Jaarsveld carried her on his motorcycle until a jolt made him look back: she was gone, his spare helmet neatly fastened to the rack. Sightings clustered on that lonely stretch of the N9 for years, and the town has since raised a statue to her.

FILE 02 The Sightings Log

Beyond the two canonical accounts, drivers reported doors opening and closing on their own, a chill in the car, the scent of apple blossoms, and a young woman in dark clothing who vanished near the spot of the 1968 crash; some accounts end with her waving the car down and disappearing before it reaches her. Locals hold that the sightings stopped after 1984 — the year her fiancé also died in a car accident — and that she finally went home.

FILE 03 The Skeptic’s File

The death is documented; every sighting is unverified oral tradition, as even sympathetic retellings concede — no police report ever confirmed a vanishing passenger, and the two canonical witnesses came forward years after the fact, by which time the story already circulated. Vanishing-hitchhiker tales are a worldwide folklore type (the bait: a real road death); Uniondale's version simply has the best-documented death and the best storytellers. The statue is the legend's monument to itself.
