FILE 01 The Legend

The Comstock Lode's 1860s boomtown — 30,000 people, a million dollars a week in silver — burned and rebuilt in brick, then emptied into a ghost of itself by the 1950s. Its Virginia & Truckee Railroad, Piper's Opera House, the Washoe Club and the Silver Queen are haunted institutions in a town that sells its dead. Mark Twain began his career at its Territorial Enterprise newspaper. The town is a National Historic Landmark that runs on boom-and-bust memory.

FILE 02 The Sightings Log

The Washoe Club's 'Lady in the Red Dress' and its three-story spiral staircase (once 'the longest in the West') anchor the file; the Silver Queen Hotel's Room 13 produces a blonde woman's presence (a prostitute murdered there by legend); the ghost tours visit the Silver Terrace cemeteries. Piper's Opera House reports its manager's ghost guarding the stage.

FILE 03 The Skeptic’s File

Virginia City's ghosts are boomtown nostalgia with a ghost-tour economy layered by decade — the town's own historical society treats the legends warmly but separately from the record. Room 13's murder is unverified; the Washoe Club's tales grew with its bar business. The skeptic's honest note: a preserved 1860s city at 6,000 feet, half-empty at night, is the best haunted theater in America — no ghosts required.
