Vlad Dracul's House — Sighișoara's Yellow House
The yellow 15th-century house in Sighișoara's UNESCO citadel where Vlad II Dracul lived and minted coins in 1431 — traditionally held to be the birthplace of Vlad the Impaler, the historical grain inside the Dracula brand.
Case File No. 258
FILE 01 The Legend
In 1431 Vlad II, a Wallachian voivode in exile and a member of the Order of the Dragon — “Dracul” — was living in Sighișoara, where the town's records show him minting coins; that year his son Vlad III, later Țepeș the Impaler, was born, and tradition fixes the birth at this house on Strada Cositorarilor in the heart of the fortified citadel. The turreted yellow house, restored with its 17th-century painted facade, now holds a restaurant at street level and a small museum of medieval arms upstairs. The citadel around it — pastel burgher houses, the covered wooden Scholars' Stairs, the clock tower — is one of the best-preserved medieval towns in Europe and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
FILE 02 The Sightings Log
The citadel's ghost walks and Dracula-themed tours all stop at the yellow house; guides retell the impaler's history under a portrait, and visitors report the usual tour-haunted texture — cold in the upstairs rooms, the sense of being watched from the turret. The genuinely eerie artifact is historical: a 16th-century mural in the house's courtyard showing the town's citizens being hanged in chains — the citadel's own memory of justice, or its absence.
FILE 03 The Skeptic’s File
No document records where Vlad III was born; the case for this house is that his father demonstrably lived and minted coins in Sighișoara in 1431, which makes it plausible, not proven. And the house's global fame rests on a chain of borrowings: Stoker never visited Transylvania, knew “Dracula” from travel pamphlets, and built his count from a Wallachian warrior's nickname. The yellow house is real medieval real estate with an excellent story attached — the ghost industry around it is imported from a novel written in England.
