FILE 01 The Legend

Portland's 1905 White Eagle Saloon — 'the hoax of the harbor', a sailors' bar with a hotel upstairs — carries the era's brothel-and-shanghaiing legends: a prostitute murdered in a upstairs room, sailors drugged through tunnels, and a Prohibition-era murder in the basement (now McMenamins, who run ghost tours). Portland's infamous Shanghai Tunnels connect nearby; the Eagle's file is the Old Town's core.

FILE 02 The Sightings Log

The murdered woman's room produces her presence and bed-shaking; the basement produces a hostile male — the 'piano player' — and cold pockets. Guests report voices and the smell of old perfume. McMenamins' hotel rooms above the bar are bookable with a ghost card on the nightstand.

FILE 03 The Skeptic’s File

Portland's 'shanghaiing' era is real but wildly exaggerated in the retelling — historians grade the tunnels-and-captives industry as mostly myth constructed for tourism. The White Eagle's murders are unverified in period records. The saloon is honest about its role in the myth machine. Its 'B' grade is for atmosphere: a 1905 saloon with a genuinely nasty working-class past, documented or not.
