FILE 01 The Legend

Willow Court began in December 1827 as a hospital for convict invalids at New Norfolk, up-river from Hobart — the colony's first dedicated medical institution — and grew across the nineteenth century into the Lunatic Asylum at New Norfolk, later Lachlan Park and finally the Royal Derwent Hospital: by the twentieth century a self-contained town of wards, villas, farm and workshops, and the oldest continuously operating mental hospital in Australia. Its 173-year record is the institution's real monument — from convict-era charity, through the overcrowded asylum decades, the villa reform movement of the 1950s (the hospital pioneered some of Australia's open-ward practice), to the deinstitutionalization era and final closure in November 2000. The ghost file grew as the site emptied: security staff and early heritage volunteers reported the ward sounds — a woman's scream from B Ward, children heard in the old wards, figures at the windows of Bronte and Allderidge, and the file's signature, lights moving through wards with no power. The precinct's afterlife has been uneven — heritage listings, an antiques market in A Block, restoration campaigns, ghost tours running the wards at night — and the file has kept pace; among Australian asylum sites, Port Arthur is older stone, but Willow Court is the deepest institutional record, and its ghosts are filed accordingly: not one story but an archive.

FILE 02 The Sightings Log

Night security, heritage volunteers and tour guests report screams and sobbing from the ward blocks, children's voices, figures at upper windows of wards sealed since 2000, and moving lights inside unpowered buildings; the site's ghost-tour operators collect reports continuously, and former staff have added memoir accounts of the hospital's last decades.

FILE 03 The Skeptic’s File

A 173-year medical institution that emptied abruptly is the single most reliable ghost generator in the built environment — grief soaked into institutional memory, reported by exactly the people who work its nights, in buildings whose acoustics were engineered for surveillance. Nothing in the file distinguishes Willow Court from any deinstitutionalized asylum in the English-speaking world except duration — and duration, not evidence, is what the legend sells. The site's genuine weight is its documented history, one of the longest institutional-care records in the southern hemisphere; the ghosts are how that history now pays its maintenance bills.
