FILE 01 The Legend

Moundsville — the West Virginia Penitentiary (1866–1995) — a Gothic fortress built on the reform era's hubris, held 2,400 inmates in space for 480. Its documented ledger: 36 executions by hanging (1866–1959) and electrocution (1951–1959), 94 suicides, and riot-era violence including the 1973 and 1986 riots. The 'Sugar Shack' — a windowless recreation basement — is the file's darkest named space. The prison runs nightly ghost tours.

FILE 02 The Sightings Log

The Sugar Shack produces voices, touching and hostile presences — the tour's anchor. 'The Wall' — the hanging area between the fences — reports figures. The cafeteria's 'knife-and-fork ghost' (a face formed by shadow) was photographed in the 1990s and remains the prison's most famous artifact. Guests in the original 5x7 cells report claustrophobic presence encounters.

FILE 03 The Skeptic’s File

Moundsville's ledger is documented — executions, suicides, riots are state records. The knife-and-fork photo is pareidolia (a real photo of a real shadow pattern). The Sugar Shack's reputation grew with the tour economy. But the prison's own staff point out the honest hierarchy: the ghosts pay for the building, the history justifies it. A solid 'A' for documented darkness + volume of reports.
