The Ghost Janitor of the Grand Street Theatre

Helena, Montana, United States · 46.5885, -112.0267
◎ 1933 fire-station building

A converted Helena building keeps a resident janitor-ghost whose contributions — cold spots, moved tools, names called in empty rooms — are treated by its occupants as company rather than haunting.

FILE 01 The Legend

The building at 15 N. Last Chance Gulch began as a garage, became a fire station in the 1933 civic rebuild, and was later remodeled into a live theatre — the Grand Street Theatre, home of Helena's community stage — with a banquet and rehearsal hall below stage level. Its ghost is named for a real employee: a janitor employed at the building in its fire-station era, nicknamed 'Bug', who worked the halls until his death, and whose afterlife duties local tradition has simply continued. The reports are domestic and benign: cold spots in the downstairs hall, tools moved to places they are never left, a voice calling names when the building is empty, and once the strong smell of tobacco smoke in the costume room with no smoker present. The Grand Street community's stance — published in the Helena paper in connection with the theatre's productions — has been to treat Bug as part of the company, a stance typical of working theatres, which keep their ghosts the way ships keep mascots.

FILE 02 The Sightings Log

Theatre staff and cast members report the name-calling voice, moved tools and cold spots in the downstairs hall, and tobacco smell in the costume room; the Helena Independent Record has covered Bug as part of the theatre's story, and generations of community-theatre volunteers have kept the file open.

FILE 03 The Skeptic’s File

A 1930s masonry building remodeled twice has drafts, settling timber and plumbing that account for every category here, and 'the ghost of a beloved employee' is the single most common folklore genre of working institutions. No obituary or employment record for Bug has been produced — he may be a composite — and the theatre's embrace of him is good box-office and good community memory, not evidence.
