FILE 01 The Legend

Ennis is a crossroads community in Madison County, Mississippi, and its mound — the McTaggart mound, a graveyard rise on farmland outside the community — carries one of the state's cleanest local legends. The printed core, which circulated in Mississippi newspaper folklore columns in the early twentieth century and was collected again in the 1970s-80s, is the woman who died in 1917 (by the standard telling, after a life whose sorrows the versions distribute differently — a lost child in some, a lost husband in others) and who has walked the mound since, lantern in hand, at dusk toward the road. The versions agree on the essentials: the walk at dusk, the direction of the road, the lantern that dims as she nears the gate. The mound is on private land, and the legend's keepers have been the neighboring families, who passed the caution not to follow the light.

FILE 02 The Sightings Log

The walker is reported at dusk, lantern in hand, along the lane by the mound; mid-century newspaper columns and later collectors recorded the tale from named local tellers, and the site remains a named tradition in Madison County.

FILE 03 The Skeptic’s File

The walker is a white-lady-with-lantern legend of the most standard European type, attached to a family graveyard the way thousands were across the American countryside; its print record is real, but a print record of a legend is evidence of a legend, not of a ghost. The lantern that dims near the gate is a firefly summer, and the walk is a neighbor's caution against children straying to a private graveyard after dark.
