Wabasha Street Caves — St Paul's Cellar of Ghosts

Saint Paul, Minnesota, United States · 44.9431, -93.0928
◎ 1859 sandstone caves

Sandstone caves carved in 1859 for brewing and storage, reborn as a 1930s speakeasy, whose ghost tours retell three gangland shootings no coroner ever recorded — the most tourist-told ghost story in the Twin Cities.

FILE 01 The Legend

The Wabasha Street Caves are man-made galleries cut into St Paul's soft St Peter sandstone from 1859, first for mushroom growing and beer storage, later as a venue. The layer everyone comes for is the Prohibition one: from about 1930 the caves ran as the Castle Royal, a nightclub where, by the canon retold on the tours, gangsters drank, dealt and on three separate occasions shot each other — three deaths, no police record, no victims named, no newspaper account. The tours themselves are the canon's keeper: for decades the caves' operators have told the gangster-shooting story to school groups and bachelorette parties alike, along with a file of cave-apparitions: a shadow that follows groups, a man in a gray felt hat by the bar arch, a woman in a flapper dress near the fireplace, and the cave's own microclimate doing the rest.

FILE 02 The Sightings Log

Ghost-tour guests and staff report the man in the gray hat, the flapper by the fireplace, and a shadow that follows groups through the galleries; the gangster-shooting canon is told nightly on the historic tours, and the venue's events staff keep a running file of unexplained sounds during teardown.

FILE 03 The Skeptic’s File

No newspaper, coroner or police record supports a single gangster shooting in the Castle Royal years — the 'three shootings' are a tour narrative that grew from the glamour of Prohibition lore, and the apparitions are a sandstone cave at constant cool temperature lit for drama. The caves' real history (beverage storage, mushrooms, a 1930s nightclub, decades of tours) is interesting enough; the ghosts are the marketing department's contribution.
